Washington, IA (December 7, 2015) – The United Presbyterian Home has named ten community and surrounding community members to their Steering Committee for their upcoming expansion project. The members include Steering Committee co-chairs David Maupin of Coralville and Dale and JoAnn Torpey of Washington. Along with them are Jean Potratz of Washington; Sandy Dunlap of Washington; Stephanie Kronlage of Washington; Gene Driscoll of Washington; Linda ‘Kitch’ Shatzer of Washington and Doug and Janice Yotty of Kalona. The UP Home announced plans for their Expansion of Quality First Services in September which includes an addition on to the south hall of the current Health Center. The first floor of the addition will house 17 private rooms and the lower level addition will have first-class wellness, fitness and therapy facilities which will include a warm water therapy pool.
“I am excited to do what I can to interpret the need of this project to our community and raise awareness of the possibilities it offers to Washington residents,” said Sandy Dunlap who is a retired educator and 30 year member of the UP Home Board of Directors. “Not only will this expansion improve the lives of our present and future residents but it will offer more opportunities for employment in the community.”
The UP Home started in 1947 with one building and has continued to expand and grow steadily on its 35-acre campus to meet the needs of its residents and the community. Most recently, building additions have included the Brownlee Health Center, McCleery Health Center addition, Kerr Hall condominium style apartments and the Main Dining Room all between the years of 1976 to 2005. In addition to new construction on campus, the UP Home has added several programs in the last 27 years which have benefited the residents. Those programs include: partnering with WCDC to staff the laundry room, UP with Kids Day Care Center, Wellness and Fitness programming and Aegis Therapies partnership which provides occupation, speech and physical therapy on campus. The UP Home believes it is essential to add this 20,000 square foot addition to continue to meet the needs and wants of their residents and the community.
“This type of capital improvement is exciting because it will attract folks to Washington which will help our economy and allow Washington to continue to grow.” said Gene Driscoll retired businessman and co-owner of Marshall’s Furniture who also lives on campus at the UP Home in a cottage with his wife Judy. “I am a strong advocate for the UP Home and Washington. My wife and I want improvements that improve the quality of life for all.”
